The first generation, the AR of 1982 and the AS facelift of 1985, was a restyled front drive Mazda 626 sold first in Japan and then in Australia from 1983 as a sedan and TX5 hatchback. Ford Australia did the styling changes, put a locally made 2.0 litre engine in it, and added a TX5 Turbo in 1986. Its model years run from 1982 to 1986. The Telstar was a Mazda 626 with Ford badges and some local styling, sold where Ford wanted a mid size car.
