The Telstar was introduced in Japan in October 1982 as the AR series sedan and hatchback, a rebadged and lightly restyled version of the new front wheel drive Mazda 626. Mazda made it at Hofu, and Ford Australia carried out the restyling that distinguished it, reaching a drag coefficient of 0.36 for the hatchback. The Telstar was a Mazda 626 with Ford badges and some local styling, sold where Ford wanted a mid size car. Ford later replaced it in most markets with the Mondeo, which was developed as a world car.
