The first P100 was introduced in South Africa in 1971 as the Ford Cortina Pickup, based on the Taunus TC and the Cortina Mk3, with the doors of the two door Cortina sedan and a vertical rear window, and a rear tray that could be a wellside or a stepside. Its model years run from 1971 to 1976. The P100 was a coupe utility pickup that Ford built on the front half of a family car, sold first in South Africa and then in Europe.
