The third generation, the BG in Japan from 1989, became the most popular Laser there thanks to a new liftback coupe. Australia received it as the KF in March 1990 and the KH facelift in October 1991, and it provided the base for the North American Escort of 1991. New Zealand kept building it long after Australia stopped. Its model years run from 1989 to 1993. The Laser was a Ford badged version of the Mazda Familia, and it was one of the smaller cars in the Ford range of that period.
