The KF Laser reached Australia in March 1990, and in Taiwan the third generation was launched in May 1990 under the extra Chinese name Golden Laser. In Indonesia local assembly began that year, and the car was the base for the Escort that Ford introduced in North America for the 1991 model year. The Laser was a Ford badged version of the Mazda Familia, and it was one of the smaller cars in the Ford range of that period. Buyers in Australia and New Zealand often did not realise the Ford was based on the Mazda 323.
