The first generation was the Laser of 1981, the Australian KA and its 1983 KB facelift, with a Meteor sedan added in 1982 and the car sold in Japan as the BE. It was a hatchback range with small Mazda engines, later turbocharged in limited form, assembled in Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan and several other countries. Its model years run from 1981 to 1984. The Laser was a Ford badged version of the Mazda Familia, and it was one of the smaller cars in the Ford range of that period.
