April 1982 brought the Meteor, the three box sedan version of the Laser, with a folding rear seat and a spare wheel that could stand upright to deepen the boot. Its front end copied the Japanese Familia sedan, and trim was split between a GL and a Ghia, each with an optional sports pack. The Laser was a Ford badged version of the Mazda Familia, and it was one of the smaller cars in the Ford range of that period. Buyers in Australia and New Zealand often did not realise the Ford was based on the Mazda 323.
