The Laser of 1981 replaced the rear wheel drive Escort in Australia and was licence built from Mazda, sold first with a 1.3 litre engine, as hatchback only, and later with a larger unit. Assembly also began at Ford's Wiri plant in Auckland, and in Zimbabwe it was the first Ford sold there for fourteen years. Buyers in Australia and New Zealand often did not realise the Ford was based on the Mazda 323. The Laser was a Ford badged version of the Mazda Familia, and it was one of the smaller cars in the Ford range of that period.
