The 1949 New Yorker used Chrysler's first postwar body with ponton three box styling shared with Dodge and DeSoto, still with a straight eight engine until the 180 horsepower FirePower Hemi V8 arrived in 1951 and made the car popular with hot rodders. A Newport hardtop was added in 1950. The wheelbase was cut in 1953 and the six cylinder gave way to the V8 in 1954, with two speed PowerFlite automatic. Its model years run from 1949 to 1954.
