The E31 was the first 8 Series, a two door grand tourer built from 1990 to 1999 with V8 or V12 engines. It replaced the E24 6 Series in 1990 but was a new and far costlier class of car, whose development began in July 1981 and cost more than 1.5 billion Deutsche Marks. It debuted at the Frankfurt show in September 1989 and sold 30,609 cars before it was discontinued for poor sales. Its model years run from 1990 to 1999.
