The 840Ci was introduced in the autumn of 1993 with a 4.0 liter M60 V8 engine delivering 286 PS, produced from mid 1993 to late 1995, as a less costly 8 Series. At the same time the 850i was renamed the 850Ci. The V8 model was intended to broaden the appeal of the E31, whose price at the start of the 1990s had put it out of reach of most buyers. The new V8 model was meant to give the 8 Series a lower entry price than the V12 850.
