BMW pulled the 8 Series from the North American market in 1997, having sold 6,920 cars there. The coupe continued in production for other markets, in the 840Ci and 850Ci forms, and the 8 Series had by then been on sale for seven years, as an expensive car whose sales had suffered from recession in the early 1990s. The decision to withdraw from North America reflected the poor sales of the expensive coupe.
