Production of the 850CSi ended in late 1996 because its S70 engine could not be modified to comply with new emission regulations without substantial re engineering. This ended the most powerful 8 Series, the car that had replaced the M8 idea, while the 840Ci and the 850Ci continued in the range. Only a few thousand 850CSi cars were built in the production run. The 840Ci and 850Ci continued to be sold in Europe and elsewhere.
