In 1998 the 8 Series E31 continued as a grand tourer produced for markets outside North America, the 840Ci and the V12 850Ci, in a car whose design had been completed in 1986 and which had been a world class coupe on its debut. Only a limited number of cars were sold in each of its last years, as the next big BMW coupe was being considered. The Alpina B12 5.7 had been available from 1992, based on the 850CSi.
