The Legend was Acura's first flagship, an executive-class V6 sedan, joined by a coupe in 1987, that opened the brand alongside the Integra in 1986. It grew out of Project XX, a joint venture between Honda and Britain's Austin Rover Group, and its success in America helped persuade Toyota and Nissan to start the Lexus and Infiniti brands. A larger second generation arrived for 1991 with a 200 horsepower engine and a six-speed manual gearbox option. For the 1996 model year Acura dropped the name and sold the next car as the 3.5 RL, which began the RL line. Generations with their own pages on this site: the first generation (1986 to 1990 model years); the second generation (1991 to 1995 model years).
