Banaras Locomotive Works, known as BLW, is a state-owned production unit of Indian Railways in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It was founded in 1956 as the Diesel Locomotive Works, abbreviated DLW, and took its present name in October 2020. For decades it built diesel-electric locomotives that were variants of the original ALCO-built WDM-2. From 2002 it began making high-horsepower locomotives of more than 4,000 horsepower based on the EMD 710 engine, namely the WDG-4 freight locomotive and the WDP-4 passenger locomotive and their variants. In 2012 it built a 5,500 horsepower locomotive on the 20-cylinder 710 engine, the WDG-5, and in March 2019 it developed the country's first bi-mode locomotive, the WDAP-5. Today it mainly produces the electric locomotives WAP-7 and WAG-9. Besides Indian Railways, it exports locomotives to countries such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal, and supplies ports, power plants, steel plants and private railways within India.
