Indian locomotive class WDAP-5

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The Indian locomotive class WDAP-5 is a single dual-mode locomotive built in 2019 by Banaras Locomotive Works at Varanasi for Indian Railways. It can run as an electric locomotive under 25 kV AC overhead wires, delivering about 5,500 horsepower, or switch to its diesel engine for about 4,500 horsepower on lines that are not electrified. The class name encodes its purpose: broad gauge, diesel, AC current, passenger service and a nominal 5,000 horsepower. It was developed to answer a practical railway problem, because trains that crossed between electrified and non-electrified sections had been losing time changing locomotives. As Indian Railways pressed on toward full electrification, the need for such a bridging design faded, and no more than the single unit, number 71000, was produced. That locomotive is recorded as being in service at the Tughlakabad locomotive shed.
