Class M11 is a mainline diesel-electric locomotive built by Banaras Locomotive Works in India for Sri Lanka Railways, first delivered in 2018. It was developed from the Indian WDG-4D, which uses a 16-cylinder version of the EMD 710 engine, but the Sri Lankan units use a 12-cylinder version derated to 3,200 horsepower, which makes them comparable to the European Class 66 although they use AC-AC traction. The units are carried by road trailer from Varanasi to the port of Chennai before shipment and were built under the Make in India programme. Ten locomotives were bought with an Indian loan. Railway unions have argued that they are too long and too powerful for Sri Lankan lines and that their air brakes do not suit most vacuum-braked carriages, and number 953 derailed on the line near Maradana on 19 December 2019.
