Indian locomotive class WDG-4

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The Indian locomotive class WDG-4, built on the EMD GT46MAC design, is a six-axle Co-Co diesel-electric freight locomotive with AC electric transmission. General Motors Electro-Motive Diesel designed it in 1997 and 1998 for Indian Railways, drawing on the EMD SD70MAC, and a 4,000 hp 16-cylinder EMD 710G3B prime mover powers it. Thirteen units came from EMD itself and eight more arrived as kits assembled in India, with the class entering service in 1999. Construction then moved to India under licence, with the first fully Indian-built unit appearing in 2002, and later versions gained IGBT electronics, 4,500 hp and the dual-cab WDG-4D form. More than 1,500 WDG-4 and WDG-4D locomotives are in operation, some built for non-railway customers such as power stations. The larger WDG-5 development was judged a failure.
