Indian locomotive class WDP-4

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The Indian locomotive class WDP-4, also known as the EMD GT46PAC, is a diesel-electric passenger locomotive with AC electric transmission. It was designed by General Motors Electro-Motive Division and built both by GM-EMD and, under licence, by Banaras Locomotive Works at Varanasi for Indian Railways, as the WDP4, WDP4B and WDP4D classes. It is the passenger version of the freight locomotive class WDG-4 and uses a 16-cylinder 710G3B diesel engine. The first ten were dispatched to India by June 2001. The original WDP-4 has a Bo1-1Bo wheel arrangement to save weight, while the WDP-4B was reconfigured as a Co-Co with 4,500 horsepower and blended braking, and the WDP-4D added a second, air-conditioned cab. It hauls trains such as the Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto Express services.
