Indian locomotive class WDP-1

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The Indian locomotive class WDP-1 is a diesel-electric passenger locomotive that Banaras Locomotive Works at Varanasi developed in 1995 for Indian Railways. The name stands for broad gauge, diesel, passenger traffic and first generation. A total of 69 units were built between 1995 and 1999. It is a lower powered version of the WDM-2, with a 2,300 horsepower powerpack based on a converted 12-cylinder ALCO 251C engine, Bo-Bo fabricated bogies and a maximum speed of 140 km/h, and it was used mainly to haul short commuter trains and for shunting. A rebuilt version, the WDP1M, has a better powerpack, better cooling and a changed suspension. Scrapping of the class has begun, and as of September 2026 seven locomotives still retained operational status on the mainline.
