The SJ Cherokee was a full size SUV based on the Wagoneer that Brooks Stevens had designed in 1963. It reintroduced a two door body with a single fixed rear side window and an optional flip out section, and was marketed as the sporty two door variant of Jeep's station wagon. The words Sport Utility Vehicle appeared for the first time in the 1974 Cherokee brochure. A four door was added in 1977. It used AMC six and V8 engines, including the 401, the largest ever offered in a Jeep, and was built in Toledo, Ohio. Its model years run from 1974 to 1983.
