The SJ Cherokees were assembled in Brisbane, Australia from 1981, where the first units were fully built imports that needed to be partly disassembled for right hand drive, and later Jeep Australia began full assembly from knock down kits. Jeep Australia first imported fully built vehicles and later began full assembly of the SUV and the J20 truck from knock down kits, though problems with spare parts, quality control and the limited capacity of the factory hurt the effort.
