A four door version was added to the Cherokee lineup in 1977, since the Cherokee had been sold only as a two door since its introduction in 1974. The new four door was not available with the wide track axles of the Chief package. The Cherokee continued as the sporty variant of Jeep's station wagon. The Cherokee Chief package continued, and the four door models, unlike the two doors, were not available with the wide track axles.
