In 1976 the Cherokee Chief package was introduced. Aside from trim changes it received larger fenders and wider axles, which allowed larger tires to be fitted to improve off road ability, though four door models were not available with the wide track axles. The Chief remained in the line through 1983. Its 401 cubic inch AMC V8 and the T-18 four speed manual transmission were part of the range, and the Quadra-Trac permanent four wheel drive went with the automatic.
