For the final year only, in 1983, a new Pioneer package was standard on the Cherokee. The full size SJ Cherokee ended its run in 1983, replaced for 1984 by the compact XJ Cherokee, which kept the name. The final SJ Cherokees were sold in a range that had included the S, Chief, Golden Eagle, Golden Hawk and Laredo trims over the years, and Jeep replaced the full size Cherokee for 1984 with the smaller XJ that kept the name, while the SJ Wagoneer carried on as the large Jeep wagon.
