The third TL was designed and developed mainly in the United States and went on sale in October 2003. It was based on the seventh-generation American Honda Accord, was no longer sold in Japan, and carried a 3.2 litre V6 with a five-speed automatic or a six-speed manual. It was the first car in the American market with a six-disc DVD-Audio system. The TL became Acura's best seller with more than 79,000 sold in 2004, and a Type-S with a 3.5 litre V6 returned for 2007.
