The fifth generation arrived in Japan in 1974, with exports from 1975. A pillared hardtop with the Royal Saloon package became the most exclusive Crown and rivaled the Nissan Cedric and Gloria. Toyota added a 2.2 liter diesel in October 1977, and after the stricter emissions rules of 1976 every Japanese car used S100 chassis numbers. A hefty Japanese sales tax on larger engines after the oil crises made the Crown hard to price, and this was the last one built in New Zealand.
