The V10 was the first Camry to stand as a model in its own right. It entered production at the Tsutsumi plant in March 1982 and went on sale in Japan that month as a four door sedan, with a five door liftback available as well. It was a first for Toyota in combining front wheel drive with a transverse engine, and it was planned with export in mind, mainly to the United States, replacing the Corona in many overseas markets. A rebadged twin called the Vista was sold through a separate dealer network in Japan. Before this, from 1979 to 1982, the Camry name had only been used in Japan for the rear wheel drive Celica Camry.
