The first 4Runner, sold in Japan as the Hilux Surf, reached North America for the 1984 and a half model year, starting in May 1984, with black or white fiberglass tops. Toyota made it by modifying the existing Hilux instead of designing a new vehicle, after the Hilux was redesigned for 1984. The first cars carried a carbureted 2.4 liter four with a five speed manual, fuel injection followed in 1985, an independent front suspension arrived for 1986, and a 3.0 liter V6 became an option in 1988.
