The Subaru 1000 was the first front engine, front wheel drive Subaru, and the first to use a boxer engine and to fall in the Japanese compact car class, after the rear engined 360 and Sambar kei cars. It was built by Fuji Heavy Industries from 1966 to 1969, and then as the larger engined and facelifted FF-1, also sold as the Star, until 1972. Its water cooled flat four engine drove the front wheels through double offset joints developed with Toyo Bearing, and it was sold as a sedan, a sports sedan and a light van. This site gives every generation and every model year its own page, in 2 generations: the Subaru 1000 (1966 to 1968); the FF-1 (1969 to 1972).
