The Subaru 1000 was available for purchase on 14 May 1966 and was released nationally in Japan in October 1966. It was the first front engined, front wheel drive Subaru and its horizontally opposed engine was water cooled instead of air cooled as first planned. Optional three point seat belts were added in October 1966, and the car sold as an alternative to the Corolla and the Sunny. It was the first production Subaru to use a boxer engine, and one of Japan's first front wheel drive cars.
