The two door sedan, model code A512, was added to the Subaru 1000 on 15 February 1967, and in June the model codes were unified as the A12. A five door light van, in reality a station wagon with a folding rear seat that took advantage of Japanese tax rules, was released on 14 September 1967, followed two months later by the Sports Sedan with the stronger EA-53 engine. The Subaru 1000 was the first Subaru in the Japanese government compact car classification.
