The first generation Sable was launched in December 1985 as a 1986 model, replacing the Marquis as the mid size Mercury line between the Topaz and the Grand Marquis and Colony Park. It was the counterpart of the Ford Taurus, sharing only its doors and roof stamping with it, and was one of the first American sedans to use aerodynamic composite headlights with replaceable halogen bulbs. It was on Car and Driver's Ten Best list in 1986, 1990 and 1991. Its model years run from 1986 to 1991.
