Following poor sales of the four cylinder engine in the Sable, the engine was dropped from the line, along with the three speed automatic, for 1987, leaving the V6 as the Sable's engine. The Sable competed with the Grand Marquis to serve as the highest selling Mercury model line, a position it shared until a different Mercury took it in 2008. The wagon had an optional rear facing third row seat. The Sable sedan shared only its doors and roof stamping with the Taurus.
