For 1990 the Sable underwent a redesign of the dashboard to accommodate the addition of a driver side airbag, and a CD player was added as an option. The Sable was on the Car and Driver Ten Best list in 1990, as it had been on its release in 1986, and again in 1991. It was the mid size sedan and wagon of Mercury, the counterpart of the Ford Taurus. It was slotted between the Topaz and the Grand Marquis and Colony Park in the Mercury range.
