For 1989 the exterior of the Sable underwent a mid cycle revision, in which the amber parking lamp lenses were replaced by clear units and sedans saw revisions to the taillamp lenses. The Sable, with the Taurus, was the first American produced sedan to use aerodynamic composite headlights with replaceable halogen bulbs. It sat between the Topaz and the Grand Marquis and Colony Park in the Mercury range. It was the Mercury twin of the Ford Taurus and replaced the Marquis as the mid size Mercury.
