The first Ford Ka was introduced on September 11, 1996 as a small and low cost addition to the Ford range, developed under the BE146 code and based on the Mark 3 Ford Fiesta platform but with a completely different exterior design borrowed from Ghia's Saetta show car. It was built on the Fiesta production line in Almussafes, Spain, and its New Edge design provoked mixed reactions. Its model years run from 1996 to 2007.
