By 2000 the Ka was the best selling car in its class in the United Kingdom, and in the Latin American market its soundproofing had been gradually removed annually since 2000 as a way to cut down costs, following the practice of other Brazilian car makers at the time. The car's main drawback was the 1,300 cc overhead valve four cylinder Endura E engine, a derivative of the Valencia unit and based on the older Kent design. Its New Edge styling was overseen by Jack Telnack.
