The third generation Explorer went on sale in January 2001 as a 2002 model, the first complete redesign, ending the shared design with the Ranger for a purpose built SUV that was tuned for higher speed European driving and benchmarked against the Lexus RX300 and the Volkswagen Touareg. It was a five door wagon, with the three door Explorer Sport of the old generation continuing to 2003. Mercury sold it as the Mountaineer and Lincoln as the Aviator. Each model year has its own page.
