The third generation Explorer for 2002 was the first complete redesign since the car's introduction, and ended its commonality with the Ranger for a purpose built SUV design. Ford benchmarked it against the Lexus RX300 and the Volkswagen Touareg, then in development, and tuned it for higher speed European driving. Because demand for three door SUVs had declined it was developed only as a five door; the three door Explorer Sport continued from the old generation.
