For 2001 Ford introduced the Explorer Sport Trac, a mid size crew cab pickup truck based on the five door Explorer. The third generation Explorer went on sale in January 2001 as a 2002 model. The second generation Explorer, three door and five door, was therefore sold in its final model year as the older platform shared with the Ranger, while the new car was a purpose built SUV. The Sport Trac was Ford's first crew cab Explorer pickup.
