The fourth generation became its own Malibu model line in 1978, when the Malibu name replaced the Chevelle name, in a downsizing that followed the 1977 Caprice and Impala. It was a rear wheel drive intermediate on the GM G platform, got a four window sedan profile for 1981, a squared off facelift for 1982 and a block style fender badge for 1983, and it was the last of the original rear wheel drive Malibus. Its model years run from 1978 to 1983.
