For the 1978 model year the Malibu name, which had been the best selling badge in the lineup, replaced the Chevelle name. It was Chevrolet's second downsized nameplate, following the 1977 Caprice and Impala, and from this point the Malibu was a model line of its own and no longer a trim level of the Chevelle. The change made the Malibu the entry point of the mid size Chevrolet range. The Malibu was based on the mid size GM G platform.
