After the Chevrolet Nova ceased production in 1979, its mid size 9C1 police version was transferred to the Malibu, filling a void for mid size police patrol cars. Pierce Marshall placed 13th in a Malibu in the 1979 Cannonball Baker Sea To Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, better known as the Cannonball Run. In Mexico General Motors produced this generation at the Ramos Arizpe plant and sold it in the region from 1979 to 1981.
