The third generation was the redesigned Chevelle of 1973, with Colonnade styling that had side pillars and frameless door windows, and it replaced the hardtops and convertibles of 1972. In 1974 the Deluxe was dropped so that the Malibu became the entry level Chevelle, and the Malibu Classic of 1976 added stacked rectangular headlights. Its model years run from 1973 to 1977. The Laguna S-3 model, introduced to replace the SS, continued through 1976.
