For 1974 the Deluxe trim of the Chevelle was dropped and the Malibu became the entry level Chevelle, which was a notable shift for a name that had been the top line subseries since 1964. The Malibu was thus the base car of the Chevelle line for the middle of the third generation, which ran from 1973 to 1977. In the eleven years since 1964 the Malibu name had moved from the top of the Chevelle range to its bottom.
