The sixth generation Impala was downsized for 1977 on a shortened version of the 1970 frame, a frame that would be used until the B body line ended in 1996. Redesigned with the Caprice, it was named Motor Trend's car of the year, regained the number one position in United States sales and was later reduced to the base full size Chevrolet. The nameplate was dropped after 1985. Its model years run from 1977 to 1985.
