The 1981 Impala was the base full size Chevrolet, popular with fleets including taxi and police pursuit use. The Bel Air name continued in production in Canada until 1981, while the Impala and Caprice sold well in the United States. The coupe and wagon body styles were still offered in 1981 and would be dropped after 1982, and the 267 and 305 cubic inch V8s remained the optional engines. The Impala remained popular for fleet use.
