The 1985 model year was the last of the original Impala, whose name was discontinued after 1985 while the Caprice continued unchanged until 1990. When the name ended, the base model full size Chevrolet was rebranded Caprice starting in 1986, with upper models called Caprice Classic and Caprice Classic Brougham. The Impala ended its first long run with the sixth generation, which had been named Motor Trend's car of the year when it was introduced for 1977.
